This week, the summer hit Rise of the Planet of The Apes makes its debut on DVD from 20th Century Fox, as well as the Fright Night remake, from Buena Vista. Also, MPI releases Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975, which I missed at Hot Docs this year, and am eager to check out.
For the cult film fan (my hand is raised!), there is another irresistible release from Shout! Factory. They offer a double DVD set of the ultra-rare 1975 The Nickel Ride (which I've been wanting to see for years) paired with John Frankenheimer's goofy crime caper 99 & 44/100% Dead (1974). Both films, which have long been -ahem- "traders' favourites", are making their debut on disk.
Also, we can't resist also plugging these double feature releases from Image Entertainment. You'll have a huge dose of 80s drive-in nostalgia in the post-apoc Def Con 4 (paired with the Roddy Piper classic Hell Comes To Frogtown). Remember Kim Richards? The adorable child actress with the really long hair in TV's "Hello, Larry" and "Diff'rent Strokes"? Among her few grown-up roles was in Tuff Turf (1985), which is being paired with Under The Boardwalk (1989), also by the same director (Fritz Kiersch).
Go get 'em!
